Accreditation

Public health leaders at the national, state and local level believe accreditation can help standardize and enhance the capacity of local health departments to meet their mission of assurance, assessment and policy development (the three core competencies of public health).
National organizations such as the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) are working with state and local health officials to develop a national accreditation program.

The Health Department's program managers recently completed a self-assessment, which allowed the agency to measure itself against NACCHO’s Operational Definition of a Functional Health Department and to identify strengths and areas where improvement is needed.
