The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department seeks to foster a healthy community by assessing health problems, promoting wellness and avoiding preventable diseases. By promoting wellness and helping the public understand potential harms to their health, the Department helps people succeed in school or at work, raise healthier families, contribute to a more vibrant local economy and actively participate in the community.

Programs such as Project LIVELY, which helps seniors maintain their independence, or the WIC Nutrition program, which helps families with young children meet nutritional needs, are just two examples of Health Promotion at the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department.

The Health Department also works closely with the Douglas County Community Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP), which provides direction and strategies for improving health in Douglas County, focusing on such areas as tobacco use prevention, physical activity and access to health care. LiveWell Lawrence is another initiative the Health Department is involved in.
