The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department’s annual “Kickin’ It With WIC” event will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the back parking lot of the Community Health Facility, 200 Maine St.

The event is for families enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The event focuses on the importance of being active and provides ideas for fun and inexpensive activities. Some of this year’s activities include: hopscotch, jump rope, tricycle races, face painting and an obstacle course. Willow, a bunny puppet, will be providing nutrition education. There also will be information about community health services and programs.

“Regular physical activity is one of the best gifts parents can give their children,” said WIC Supervisor Jolene Croxell. “Establishing regular physical activity patterns early in life is key. Finding simple, inexpensive activities families can do together such as biking, walking or playing catch increases the chances that physical activity will become a regular part of the day.”

The WIC program serves pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children ages 5 and under, who meet income guidelines and are determined to be at nutritional risk. Participants receive nutrition counseling and checks to purchase healthy foods for their families. There are about 1,400 individuals participating in the Douglas County WIC program.
