Title: Public Health Nurse


Kathy Colson joined the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department as a public health nurse in 1996 after working as a pediatric nurse. She worked three years at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, nine years at Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine in Lawrence, and two years for the Eudora School District.

As a public health nurse, Kathy provides services including: immunizations, health education, pap smears and STD and pregnancy testing. She also helps investigate communicable diseases and is among a rotation of nurses who provide care at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.

In 2011, Kathy became the Clinic Supervisor, overseeing the clinic nursing staff.

Kathy is a 1975 graduate of St. Anthony’s Hospital School of Nursing in Rockford, Ill. Kathy is a 2010 Kansas Core Public Health Program graduate. She served on the Douglas County Dental Clinic board for 3 years.

Kathy moved to Lawrence in 1981 from Iowa. She is married to Jim, and they have two grown children and four grandchildren.
