Why Policy Development?
Policy development and community partnership development are critical components of the 10 Essential Public Health Services, which outline the foundational public health services that local health departments provide to their communities. By utilizing policy development, LDCPH communicate more effectively, utilize legal and regulatory actions, strengthen and mobilize community partnerships (i.e. Community Health Improvement Plan) and create and/or champion policies, plans, and laws.
What Does Policy Development Look Like at our Organization?
- Development of our research-based policy agenda.
- Collaboration with community organizations to promote equitable policy solutions.
- Representation on various committees and boards to provide policy expertise.
- Establishing equitable policies on a local and state level.
- Publish policy briefs on policy topics.
- Present on various policy-related topics.
- Develop shared policy goals with other large health departments in Kansas.
- Oversee the Policy Development Network for local health departments.
Every two years, LDCPH published a policy agenda that is aligned with goals and strategies outlined in the Community Health Improvement Plan. The policy agenda, which is approved by our Health Board, provides direction and data-backed solutions to our policy development goals on both a local and state level.
What is a Policy Brief?
Policy briefs provide information on trends, practical policy solutions, and timely data for implementation of various policies. Periodically, LDCPH will publish policy briefs on various health-related policy topics on interest to Lawrence, Douglas County, and/or LDCPH.
LDCPH has made the following policy briefs available to view and download:
Health in All Policies (HiAP) is a collaborative approach to articulating health considerations in to policymaking and programming across various sectors including local and state governments.
